At 6'2 and 190 lbs, Puempel was originally selected 24th overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 2011 NHL Draft.

TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reported on Thursday's edition of Insider Trading Athanasiou is expected to sign a contract, in the NHL or elsewhere, by the end of the weekend.

DET and RFA forward Andreas Athanasiou have agreed to terms on a one-year contract worth $1.387M.

The Capitals' star recorded his 10th goal of the season on Friday and it counted as the overtime victor against the Detroit Red Wings. He has appeared in all eight of the Red Wings' games this year but has yet to tally a point.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (3-3-1): Nicklas Backstrom (three goals) and Kuznetsov lead the team with 11 points and Ovechkin has 10 (nine goals), but has been kept off the scoresheet in two straight games.

Athanasiou, 23, had 18 goals and 29 points along with a minus-7 rating in 64 games last season.

This season in Hartford (AHL), Puempel has one goal and two assists in five games.

From his big 6-foot-2 frame to his deceptive speed and ability to undress a defense in a variety of ways, Athanasiou is a pleasure to watch on the ice.

The contract dispute was well-documented over the offseason with Bob McKenzie discussing the topic Thursday, highlighting the December 1 deadline to get a contract signed. He flew there at the start of this month and has been skating with a team there while debating whether to play in Europe or the KHL.

The Detroit Red Wings already made a move today, sending forward Riley Sheahan to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Scott Wilson.

"There is an incredibly high level of exasperation on both sides, from the Red Wings and Athanasiou".
