The organization credits that number to the millions of dollars raised and the thousands of fearless people who continue to search for a cure.

The event honored breast cancer survivors in the area.

"It is unfortunate that breast cancer is only discussed during October as it certainly is fought all year long", she said.

"We are so grateful to our community to everyone who contributed to the success of this event, said Kathryn Tucker, community development manager for the Northeast Region of the American Cancer Society". "Ten years ago we decided we could be a little more than that and make this a picnic in the park". Since then, the tumor has been removed and Payne went through chemotherapy treatment.

"Today is celebrating our survivors.friendship, family, looking at not only our survivors but those who aren't with us anymore", Ortner said.


In 2009, Ms Ambrose discovered a close male friend was battling breast cancer.

"It's important to support the other survivors", she said about her participation in the walk.

"While I have never visited Fiji I certainly would be interested in coming to Fiji and supporting your breast cancer awareness campaign".

"A positive attitude will help you get through the day, but there will be days that it's extremely hard", Smith said.
