Man arrested after 9 bodies, 2 severed heads found in Tokyo flat

Japanese police have arrested a 27-year-old man after finding nine dismembered bodies in his apartment.

The parts included at least two severed heads, arms, and legs, scattered across picnic coolers in the apartment, and covered with what appeared to be cat litter, Japan's Asahi Shimbun reported. Police suspect that the bodies found at the apartment in Zama, Kanagawa Prefecture, include the body of the missing woman, who may have become acquainted with Shiraishi on an internet site for people with suicidal feelings.

Police told Kyodo News that body parts, some cut down to the bone, also were found in toolboxes.

According to Japanese public broadcaster NHK, police searched Shiraishi's home as part of an investigation into the disappearance of a 23-year-old woman from Hachioji City, in the Tokyo suburbs.

"I killed them, and I'm a busy little bodies to hide the evidence", said the man to the police, according to NHK.

The police arrested Shiraishi, whose occupation is unknown, on an initial charge of discarding a body.

The apartment is located near the U.S. Army's Camp Zama.

The sources quoted Shiraishi as saying that he meant to destroy evidence. Investigators plan to carry out DNA tests in an effort to identify the deceased, they said.

Meanwhile, the Jiji press agency reported that Shiraishi chopped the bodies of eight women and a man and transferred the remains into the bathroom.

The apartment is in a residential area along the Odakyu Odawara Line, about 600 meters from Sobudai-mae Station.

The horrifying find was made amid an investigation that started on October 24 after a 23-year-old woman had gone missing.

Shiraishi's neighbors noticed "foul smells" near his apartment lately.

Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

"I thought it was the smell of sewage", he said. In 2015, a man killed five people, including relatives and neighbors, in another knifing spree, according to the AP.
