Fatal Pileup Outside Of Toronto Shuts Down Highway After Massive Fire

"The collision involves approximately 14 vehicles, including at least 3 transport trucks", Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told reporters on the scene.

At least two people have died following a multi-vehicle collision followed by an explosion on Highway 400 near Bradford.

The crash, which involved two fuel tanker trucks, caused a huge fire.

"It was massive. People were seriously and literally running for their lives", he said. "Twisted transport trucks, destroyed vehicles, metal that is unrecognizable as to whether or not it is a vehicle at all or not".

He said that the crews on scene ultimately made a decision to let the fuel burn off for environmental reasons after successfully containing the fire, a process that took about two-and-a-half hours.

CBC News says a chain reaction of collisions started late Tuesday night when a truck slammed into the back of another that was stopped in traffic. "400) up at Highway 9", Schmidt said.

Police were responding to another collision further north on the highway which created a slowdown when the pileup occurred.

Emergency services were on scene Wednesday investigating what or who may be responsible.

He said that officials do not yet have a firm number of fatalities or injuries as a result of the fire and may not have one for some time.

Ontario Provincial Police said the highway is closed indefinitely. "No other sector would have this many fatalities and not have it addressed by the coroner".

The crash involved five commercial vehicles including two fully loaded fuel tankers.

He conceded that some trucking companies are spending "hundreds of thousands of dollars" on improving safety in their fleet but he said that clearly there is a problem that needs to be addressed. "An absolute chaotic scene and we're going to be here pretty much the entire day".

All lanes of Highway 400 have been closed in both directions between Country Road 88 and Highway 89. The northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 400 are now closed and police have said these closures will be in effect for most of the day.
