Loftus-Cheek targeting World Cup place after impressive England debut

Gareth Southgate's squad has been hit by a series of injuries, with Jack Butland, Dele Alli, Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane among the absent stars for the friendly.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek admits he had a "vision" in the summer to leave Chelsea in order to speed up his career, a move which has seen him earn an England call-up.

The Three Lions received excellent performances from debutants Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Jordan Pickford, with the latter making a number of impressive saves to keep Germany at bay, while substitute Jesse Lingard missed a great chance to win it deep into stoppage time.

The Chelsea midfielder, on-loan at Crystal Palace, impressed at the base of the Three Lions midfield against the world champions on his worldwide bow. The performance was an encouraging one.' Speaking after his man of the match display, Loftus-Cheek said he believes he's in with a chance of gatecrashing Southgate's World Cup party.

It took him 10 minutes to realise he is OK at this level.

Germany boss Joachim Low is without World Cup winners Manuel Neuer, Jerome Boateng, and Toni Kroos, but has the likes of Leroy Sane, Mesut Ozil and Julian Draxler in his starting line-up, while RB Leipzig left-back Marcel Halstenberg makes his Germany debut at the age of 26 - what a rise it's been! He's got so many good attributes, top attributes, and that's why we put him into the team. I think it was a very tactical game. He's a player I've worked with since Under-15s. I had Gareth for three years in Under-21s, so it wasn't too much of a new thing coming here. I've settled in really well and they gave me a platform to go out and play. Obviously against a well-oiled machine they will have periods in the game where they control possession but I didn't think they hurt us.
