The announcement came after push back following the verification of Jason Kessler, the white supremacist organizer of the deadly Unite The Right rally in Charlottesville last August.

"Verification was meant to authenticate identity & voice but it is interpreted as an endorsement or an indicator of importance", the company tweeted. When verified Twitter users engage with other users on the platform, their engagement is more likely to send a notification, and verified users have the option to only get notifications from other verified users.

Which is why people got upset on Wednesday when Twitter verified Kessler, a move that, in the minds of many, legitimized a white supremacist.

Twitter on Friday said that it has paused all general verifications while they work on resolving it. Seems like the kind of person Twitter would not want to amplify, but alas no. According to Twitter, "a verified badge does not imply an endorsement", but tweets from verified users tend to appear near the top of searches, allowing information they contain to be disseminated faster.

Twitter has more than doubled its character allowance for display names.

"Our agents have been following our verification policy correctly, but we realized some time ago the system is broken and needs to be reconsidered", he tweeted, saying he should have addressed the issue sooner.

Twitter verifies handles of influential celebrities, politicians, journalists, institutions and people known to have a huge following.

'And we failed by not doing anything about it.

But Twitter's verification system has also become a status symbol over the years, in part because the group of verified users on Twitter is a very small portion of the overall user base. If you're an individual requesting verification-rather than a company-you'll need to provide a copy of your passport or driver's license for Twitter to check your identity.
