Duterte made the assurance in a bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the sidelines of the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit in Pasay City on Monday night.

At the meeting, Duterte, who chairs this year's ASEAN meetings, assured Abe of his support in Tokyo's campaign against North Korea.

Some of the ASEAN members said in response that North Korea presents a serious threat to the region, the spokesman said without going into further detail.

In brief remarks prior to media being ushered out of the meeting, Turnbull said North Korea's "recklessness" needed to be stopped, while Abe said the most immediate challenge was to ensure regional peace and stability.

At the beginning of the meeting, Mr Turnbull said the threat posed by North Korea and its leader Kim Jong-un was a key topic. It is bad. It puts a strain on everybody, not only in Japan but all over the world.

"And he should realize that he'd be responsible for ending life in this planet if his mind goes out of control", he added.

"That is why we are persuading him, maybe pleading with him to stop the aggressive posture".

"The possibility can not be ruled out that a military attack would kill Japanese abductees, given that President Trump has threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea", the official said.

The foreign minister stressed that North Korea's possession of nuclear weapons is a war deterrence to end the threat and to prevent the military invasion of the US.

Trump ratcheted up pressure on North Korea even before he met Abe, saying before a crowd of U.S. and Japanese troops at the U.S. Yokota Air Base shortly after he arrived Sunday that "no one - no dictator, no regime and no nation - should underestimate, ever, American resolve". He is set to also attend the 12th East Asia meet on Tuesday. He also proposed that Japan and China cooperate in doing business in third countries. We need to carry forward this fine tradition. "At the East Asia Summit, the leaders shared an unprecedented sense of crisis", Abe said in a press conference.

Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said APT alliance has broadened to include food security, energy, environment, and health.

"With the North Korea situation at an important phase, the role China ought to play is very big", Abe said.

He said Japan will supply rice to Laos and Myanmar this year through the APT emergency rice reserve agreement.
