The performance drew worldwide attention and admiration. She helped develop a program to train women in self-defense in various situations after she was robbed at gunpoint a month after she was crowned as Miss South Africa.

Like Ms Margaret Gardiner, who was the first South African to win the title back in 1978, Nel-Peters becomes the second to win Miss Universe after competing with over 91 contestants from across the world.

"HIV/AIDS is a very big problem in my country South Africa, so I hope to stand as an advocate for that", Nel-Peters told reporters at the crowning event.

Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, 22, edged out her rivals from Colombia and Jamaica to take the crown.

Donald Trump formerly co-owned The Miss Universe Organization with NBCUniversal. It also featured its first ever participants from Cambodia, Laos and Nepal.

This included Tatum Keshwar, who was second runner-up in the Miss World pageant in 2009, while Tansey Coetzee came in the top five the year before.

South Africans started their work week on a high note with the news that our very own beauty queen was bringing home a top worldwide pageant title.

The top 16 was composed of four girls from the continents of America, four from Europe, and four from Asia, Africa, and Pacific, plus four "wild cards". (BPCI) congratulated Peters through Binibining Pilipinas' Facebook page for a phenomenal representation of the country in this year's Miss Universe pageant.
