Armed police are on the scene in Potsdam, Germany, after the suspected device was found by police.

German police have evacuated a Christmas market in the city of Potsdam following reports about an explosive device planted nearby.

What was found in the suspicious package?

Potsdam police said X-rays had shown wires, nails and batteries inside the package, but that no detonator had been found.

The controlled defusing of the suspicious object was later successfully conducted by the special forces of the German Federal Police in Berlin and Brandenburg.

Brandenburg state's top security official, Interior Minister Karl-Heinz Schroeter, said it also held a large firecracker without a fuse, Germany's dpa news agency reported on Friday night.

"The investigations are still just beginning", Schröter said, adding that the powder might be a fake created to look like a bomb.
