There are conflicting reports about the circumstances surrounding the incident near the village of Qusra.

The man who opened fire told Ynet that "dozens of Palestinians threw rocks and stones at us, we were in mortal danger and we tried to protect the children".

According to human rights activists, the slain Palestinian was working in his field when he was shot, and the mob only arrived at the scene later.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Wednesday's incident took place while a group of 20 Israeli boys, who were accompanied by adults, went on a hiking trip near the village of Qusra. Two Jewish fathers escorting the hikers were injured. The army said security forces were using riot-dispersal means to try to end the clashes and that one soldier was lightly hurt by a Molotov cocktail thrown by a Palestinian. Medics also treated the wounded.

The Times of Israel reported that the settler who opened fire was one of two "armed escorts" for the hikers.

"The critical situation resulting from the air, land and sea blockade presupposes the nearly total isolation and great deprivation of the 2 million Palestinian civilians living in the area", the Cuban ambassador said. A video from the scene showed that their exit was blocked by a group of Palestinians. When Mr Odeh refused, one of them shot him, Mr Daghlas added.

Despite being subject to invasion, blockade and Israel's ongoing policy of forced migration, the Palestinian people have continued their struggle for an independent state comprising the Gaza Strip (currently under a crippling blockade) and the West Bank (still under Israeli occupation) with West Jerusalem as its capital.

Israeli settlers attacked a number of Palestinians homes with rocks and pepper-sprayed two children, causing them severe suffocation on Friday in the occupied city of Hebron earlier this month.

Settlement building in the occupied West Bank and annexed East Jerusalem is considered illegal under global law.
