The 60th Annual Grammy Nominations Are Black AF

Black artists are often relegated to categories like rap and R&B and rarely move out of them.

Which is why it's incredibly important that, this year, the Grammy's Album of the Year category includes zero white dude artists (aside from a few producers in the background like Jack Antonoff, for example.) Lorde is the only white artist in the category of four other performers: Jay-Z, Bruno Mars, Childish Gambino, and Kendrick Lamar.

The New York Times notes that while all major award shows are under scrutiny for how they handle diversity, "The Grammy nominations are striking, as minority artists dominate the ballot in almost all of the most prestigious categories, including record, song and album of the year". The Rock and Alternative categories are completely dominated by men, while the Best New Artist category might be the strongest of the year in terms of representation with Alessia Cara, Khalid, Lil Uzi Vert, Julia Michaels, and SZA all nominated. Having two hip-hop albums nominated for the prestigious category is also a big deal.

Surprisingly absent from these main categories are Kesha and Harry Styles, both of whom seemed like obvious choices. That tune also earns Taylor Swift a nomination in the country category as songwriter. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and all 14 songs charted.

Drake has previously been nominated 33 times at the Grammys, and has won three times: Best Rap song for Hotline Bling, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for Hotline Bling, and Best Rap Album for Take Care.

Come January 28, when the 60th Grammys take place in NY, it should hopefully be a showdown between Childish Gambino, Jay-Z, and Kendrick Lamar. Twenty-seven-time Grammy victor Alison Krauss, the leading victor among female artists in Grammy history, scored two nominations for tracks from her Windy City LP, "Losing You" and "I Never Cared for You".

If you noticed a distinct lack of Taylor Swift on this year's list of nominees, there's actually a reason for that.
