Eagles sign WR Alshon Jeffery to 4-year, $52M extension

According to numbers from Adam Schefter of ESPN, Jeffery's deal is not an outlandish one, by any stretch. His contract now runs through 2021. Covering 4 years this contract pays $52 million, of which $27 million is guaranteed. "Like I said the other day, I love it here", Jeffery said. "We have a great group here and I'm excited to be a part of it". He has seven touchdowns, five of which have come in the last four games. And Jeffery, in his first season with Philly, has 619 yards on 43 receptions-with seven touchdowns. Zach Ertz, Jeffery, and Nelson Agholor have been the top three receivers this season, and all three are under contract next season.

In the grand scheme, however, this deal, along with the four-year, $48M extension signed by Tim Jernigan earlier this month, will pay dividends for the Eagles far beyond the production these of two players.

Teammates and future free agents alike will be encouraged by the franchise making good with players who worked their tails off to help the team get where they are today. "We are excited about his future here".

"First of all I just want to thank [owner] Jeffrey Lurie and the entire Eagles organization", Jeffrey said in a statement.

The ability to convince top-tier talent to sign affordable, short-term deals will be even more important once the Eagles have to budget for the cost of an elite franchise quarterback - as they will sometime around 2020.

None of the team's core would be almost as important, of course, without Wentz himself - the quarterback's meteoric second-year rise has elevated the Eagles on and off the field en route to an inevitable and long-awaited return to the playoffs.

It appears as though Alshon Jeffery has found a new (permanent) home.
