Arsene Wenger believes Manchester United were to blame for draw with Saints

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was pleased with the persistence of his side during their 1-1 draw with Southampton on Sunday.

And their result at St. Mary's Stadium could have been even worse.

Alexis Sanchez drifted into space on the left and put a cross through to Olivier Giroud, who got between Yoshida and Van Dijk to flick a header into the bottom corner for Arsenal's equaliser in the 87th minute.

Last Saturday Arsenal lost 3-1 to United after giving away two simple goals in the first 11 minutes.

For Giroud however, he can celebrate matching a record set by Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

They claimed that the pundits didn't make a big enough deal about some of Andre Marriner's refereeing decisions when reporting on the match.

Charlie Austin fired an early opener for Mauricio Pellegrino's hosts - his fifth in three Premier League starts this season - and the striker was unlucky not to have more to show for the palpable sense of panic he and the Southampton attack injected into a shambling Arsenal backline.

"I can't believe Arsenal didn't win that, with all that possession", he wrote, as Wenger's side once again produced very little in front of goal.

And Shearer wasn't going to keep quiet about the Gunners' shortcomings coming back to haunt them, once again.

Those dropped points leave Arsenal 17 point adrift of leaders Manchester City and a point outside the top four and Cech knows the sluggish starts need to be eradicated.
