Louisiana, Mississippi and SC recorded the highest number of outpatient visits for all influenza-like illnesses. A flu shot may not only reduce your chance of getting sick but it may also help you avoid a potential liability.

Free flu vaccines are available for uninsured Sedgwick County adult residents while the vaccination is in stock. The other two states seeing high influenza volumes are MS and Louisiana.

Myrtle Hilliard Davis Comprehensive Health Centers reported a significant increase in the number of diagnosed influenza cases this flu season. The case rate for Georgetown County was 32 per 100,000, while Florence County had 31. The vaccine is the same formula that was used during Australia's most recent flu season- which is similar to what the US will face.

While it's unclear what the implications of what's going on in Australia are for the Northern Hemisphere, medical professionals here in Iowa still express a high degree of confidence in the effectiveness of the flu vaccine. One false misconception is that an individual can get flu from the vaccine.

Flu symptoms, which can include fever, coughing, sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills, and fatigue, generally don't pose serious consequences for many people, but can develop into more serious health problems like pneumonia or respiratory failure and can, at times, be fatal. Some medical reports suggest it might only be 10 percent effective.

There have also been 21 ICU admissions and 13 reported deaths related to the flu.

Flu viruses change from year to year, so it's important to get a flu shot each flu season.

With flu cases on the rise across the country, local health officials urge people to get vaccinated.

"Now that flu season has arrived, the best way to protect yourself, your family and your co-workers is to get a flu shot", said Acting Health Commissioner Christopher R. Rinn.

For the past two weeks, over 200 patients have visited Barnes-Jewish Hospital's emergency department for flu-like symptoms, a spokesman said, adding that this does not mean they were all influenza-positive.

For the rest of us, getting vaccinated is the best defense against a disease that kills, on average, 36,000 Americans each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

The new figures of 290,000 - 650,000 deaths are based on recent data from more diverse countries and exclude deaths from non-respiratory diseases.
