The announcement ends months of rumors regarding a Shazam acquisition, as Spotify and Snapchat were also said to be bidding for the startup.

While Apple didn't immediately confirm that news to HuffPost, and it has denied similar reports in the past, a phase-out of music downloads wouldn't be entirely unexpected. According to TechCrunch, this last company might also have been in contact with two other enormous enterprises: Snapchat and Spotify.

"Spotify has made the discovery of new music front and centre of what makes it a compelling proposition", Mark Mulligan, a digital content consultant at Midia Research, explained to the BBC.

An Apple's spokesperson said in a statement that its team is "thrilled" that Shazam will be joining the Cupertino-based Apple.

Shazam, which says it has more than 100 million monthly users, makes most of its revenue from commissions paid on referrals to Apple's iTunes Store. Apple Music and Shazam are a natural fit, sharing a passion for music discovery and delivering great music experiences to our users. "We have exciting plans in store, and we look forward to combining with Shazam upon approval of today's agreement".

The influential Music Business Worldwide site points out that the reported price is significantly lower than the $1bn valuation placed on Shazam during its last funding round in 2015.

At present, Spotify has 60 million users worldwide, while Apple Music has just 27 million.

If the company is thinking to shut down Shazam, it will represent a considerable hit to Spotify.

Siri briefly automatically recognized playing music using Shazam, but the feature was quickly changed to only work when the user actually asks what song is playing.

Shazam's media recognition technology could also be integrated deeper in Apple's software and services in the future.
