Ryanair confirms it will recognise pilot unions

He said the union put forward a pilot framework proposal to fast track negotiations and that the airline was happy for the union to have taken an approach to deal with the issues quickly.

"Recognising unions will be a significant change for Ryanair, but we have delivered radical change before", Michael O'Leary said.

The airline is due to meet a pilots' union for the first time in its 32-year history on Tuesday.

"If the best way to achieve this is to talk to our pilots through a recognised union process, then we are prepared to do so, and we have written today to these unions inviting them to talks to recognise them and calling on them to cancel the threatened industrial action planned for Christmas week".

Ryanair Holdings Plc's Irish pilots gave the company less than two days to come up with a agreement to recognize their labor union.

Earlier this year, he argued that pilots' unions are a "busted flush" who "preside over the death of numerous flag carrier airlines".

It was agreed that staff would not join a union on the basis that they would influence how the company was run.

The airline reversed its longstanding refusal to recognize pilots' unions last week, saying it had invited several for talks because it wished to "avoid any threat of disruption to its customers and its flights from pilot unions during Christmas week".

Over the years, Ryanair have fought hard to keep unions out - with a number of key cases taking place that have challenged what it means to bargain collectively in Ireland.

However, IMPACT, the union involved, have warned that the strike action for December 20 is not cancelled outright, merely suspended, and may arrive on another day following the outcome of today's meeting, and they will be making no further comment on the matter until after the meeting with management.

Two other unions - Italy's ANPAC and Portugal's SPAC - called off Christmas strikes after this announcement.
