Glass barrier between Jadhav, family; defence experts call it 'inhumane'

Kulbushan Jadhav's mother, Avanti, and wife, Chetankul, held a 40-minute-long meeting with the convicted RAW agent at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after arriving in Islamabad on Monday morning via a commercial flight.

The death sentence against Jadhav was stayed in May this year after New Delhi took Islamabad to the International Court of Justice alleging Pakistan had violated the Vienna Convention on Consular Access. Before the meeting, the security check of the family was performed. The tweet made it a point to identify Jadhav, a former Indian Navy officer, with his military title.

Lieutenant General (Retd.) Raj Kadyan also said that the meeting that took place on Monday can not be called a family meeting.

"I will state this categorically, this meeting was not consular access being given to Commander Jadhav".

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Foreign Office, in a statement, has clarified that Jadhav was not given consular access.

The meeting started at around 1.35pm and lasted about 45 minutes, after which the entire party remerged, and were driven away in a white SUV.

It was the fist time Jadhav was meeting his family since his arrest in March previous year, and Pakistan portrayed it as a humanitarian gesture to mark the birthday of the country's founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

"This is not their last meeting with him", he said, indicating that Jadhav would not be executed in the near future.

The meeting took place at the Pakistan Foreign Office in Islamabad, where Jadhav's emotional mother and wife were seen getting out of a auto after arriving at the meet location from the Indian embassy.

He added that media crews will be able to cover the arrival and departure of Jadhav's wife and mother at the ministry and Pakistan has agreed to honor India's request not to allow any media interaction with the visitors, the official added. Pakistan claims Jadhav is the face of Indian terrorism, who entered into Pakistan controlled Balochistan Province via Iran under the name of Hussien Mubarak Patel.

Speaking to ANI, Major General (retired) GD Bakshi said, "Today the spokesperson of Pakistan's foreign ministry was acting like he is the reincarnation of Mother Teresa".

Foreign Office Director India desk Dr Fariha was also present during the meeting.

India, however, maintains that Jadhav was kidnapped from Iran where he had business interests after retiring from the Indian Navy.

They also did not talk to the reporters while leaving the building, although journalists kept shouting questions.

Jadhav was sentenced to death by Islamabad in April, on charges of espionage.

After Jadhav was sentenced to death in April, India asked the World Court for an injunction to bar the execution, arguing that he was denied diplomatic assistance during what it says was an unfair trial.
