Tokyo-bound flight turns back after four hours due to ''unauthorised person''

The couple and all passengers on All Nippon Airways flight 175 spent 8 hours and 20 minutes in the sky, and Teigen tweeted through the whole thing.

Online flight tracker Flightaware showed the plane making a sharp turn over the Pacific, just over four hours out of LA, and returning. Police officer Adonis Cutchlow of the LAPD did not explain why the plane had to be sent back, but simply said: "All we know is that it was turned around".

One fellow passenger racked up 45,000 retweets and almost 1,000 followers with a single tweet after posting a picture of the famous couple aboard the flight. "The pleasure I get out of the story is worth more to me than a direct flight to Tokyo". As part of the airline's security procedure, the pilot in command chose to return to the originating airport, where the passenger was disembarked.

After landing at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) once again, the passengers had to wait to be questioned by police.

But for Teigen, who was traveling with her husband, the singer John Legend, the incident provided ideal Twitter fodder for her devoted followers.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) flight bound for Tokyo's Narita Airport turned around to go back to Los Angeles International Airport, possibly due to an unauthorised person on the plane.

Teigen also tweeted photos, videos and updates as they waited to resume the trip. ANA is researching the situation now to determine how the passenger boarded the flight. She said passengers were told someone had managed to board the ANA flight with a United Airlines ticket and added that police interviewed passengers who were sitting near the person.

It may seem outrageous, but it is surprisingly common for planes to return to their point of origin midway through a flight, analysts said. The total time for the flight to take off and return was just over eight hours.

"ANA would like to express its apologies to the passengers for the inconvenience", the airline said.
