Chilly Today, Slight Chance for Snow Saturday

SATURDAY: Mostly cloudy skies a few snow flurries are possible, with a freezing cold temperature of 28 degrees.

The cold rainy pattern that has dominated the area yesterday will quiet down with cooler than average temperatures expected through the weekend.

Snow showers will arrive in central Maryland as we sleep. This means even more cold. "How cold it will be is what we're still trying to figure out". Relatively "mild" highs should top out in the mid to upper 40s.

Environment Canada is expecting temperatures that reached around -20C overnight to climb during the day.

When the ball drops in Chicago, it's expected to feel like minus-10 degrees outside, according to AccuWeather, a private weather service based in State College, Pennsylvania. Wind: N/NE 10-20; gusty.

The mercury won't even rise to zero on Saturday and Sunday in Minneapolis, according to AccuWeather.

The brutal temperatures prompted US President Donald Trump to tweet that the country could, perhaps, "use a little bit of that good old global warming that our Country, but not other countries, was going to pay TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS to protect against".

NEW YEAR'S EVE SUNDAY NIGHT: The arctic chill continues for New Year's Eve night, with an overnight low temperature of 6 degrees.

A large dome of Arctic air is bringing the coldest weather to the Valley since last January. Morning temperatures may be in the low teens with wind chill values again in the single digits. Overnight low minus 28.

By New Year's Day, much of the Deep South will feel the Arctic breeze, Kottlowski said.

As this cold air spilled over the Great Lakes it generated incredible snowfall, including 165cm (65 inches) in Erie, shattering the Pennsylvania two-day snowfall record, and up to 157cm (62 inches) in Oswego County, New York. Skies will be clear throughout this bitterly cold stretch too.

Low clouds will give way to mostly sunny skies today and keep the afternoon comfortable and rain free.
