After suffering a heart attack last weekend, Garner had been hospitalized and placed in a medically induced coma.

The activist daughter of Eric Garner, who died in police custody three years earlier, had gone into cardiac arrest following an asthma attack on Christmas Eve - and doctors said Thursday she had suffered severe brain damage as a result of lack of oxygen during the cardiac arrest. Pantaleo had been in the process of arresting Garner on the suspicion that he was selling loose cigarettes.

Eric Garner's pleas of "I can't breathe!" as he was put into a chokehold by Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo became a national rallying cry and helped spark the Black Lives Matter movement.

Ms Garner's official Twitter account, run by her family and friends since she became ill, asked that she be remembered as a mother, daughter, sister and aunt with a heart "bigger than the world".

"I'm just trying to get the truth out there to tell his side of the story", she said.

Garner became a vocal advocate against police brutality following the death of her father, Eric Garner, a Black Lives Matter icon.

"The only thing I can say is that she was a warrior", Garner's mother, Esaw Snipes, said in an interview Saturday. One thread of messages claimed NYPD officers kicked everyone out of her hospital room despite the fact that they were allowed to be there. "It's a shame because I know what happened on that video", Garner told NBCBLKin March 2015.

The coroner declared his death a homicide, though no one has been charged and Pantaleo is still on the New York Police Department's payroll, according to NPR.

Palanteo was charged with causing Garner's death, but a grand jury declined to indict him.

"Even with my own heartbreak, when I demand justice, it's never just for Eric Garner", she wrote in The Washington Post in 2016.

With former president Obama, Garner criticized his reactions to her father's death and the slow pace of the DOJ investigation. She also told NBCBLK that her goal was to continue fighting for justice for him and others caught in similar situations. "She stood up for justice for her father", the Reverend Al Sharpton said in announcing the death of Ms Garner.
