U.S. envoy calls for emergency United Nations session on Iran

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley praised Iranian protesters Tuesday, adding that the US is seeking an emergency Security Council meeting in NY and the Human Rights Council in Geneva regarding Iran.

After she read out social media posts written by Iranians in support of the protests, Haley dismissed Iranian leaders' contention that the Islamic Republic's enemies designed the protests. "The demonstrations are completely spontaneous", Haley said. "This is the precise picture of a long oppressed people's rising up against their dictators". Hundreds have been arrested.

"If the Iranian dictatorship's history is any guide, we can expect more outrageous abuses in the days to come", she warned.

"The UN must speak out in the days ahead, we will be calling for an emergency session", she said.

"The global community has a role to play on this", Haley urged.

Asked for a response to the diplomatic overtures, Haley told journalists at the UN: "We won't take any of the talks seriously if they don't do something to ban all nuclear weapons in North Korea".

"The people of Iran are crying out for freedom", Haley said.

"We must not be silent". In her remarks, Haley wasted no time criticizing the regime and siding with the protesters against their oppressors.

"The worldwide community failed to do that in 2009", she added, referring to Iran's Green Revolution.

"The whole territory of the U.S.is within the range of our nuclear strike and a nuclear button is always on the desk of my office and this is just a reality, not a threat", he said, while emphasising that the weapons would only be used if North Korea was threatened. "The president is willing to go to great lengths to stop all funding from Pakistan as they continue to harbor and support terrorism".

Haley added that the General Assembly's vote condemning the announced US embassy move to Jerusalem made a serious impression.

The US was the only country in the 14 member body to vote against the measure.

A reporter later asked Haley why the USA stood by moving the embassy to Jerusalem when so many other nations opposed it.

"I stood proudly even if I was the only hand in the Security Council to fight for the will of the people of the United States", Haley replied.

"The Palestinians now have to show their will - they want to come to the table".

"We look forward to candidly discussing interests from both sides face-to-face with North Korea along with the North's participation in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics", Unification Minister Cho Myong-gyon told reporters. "They work with us at times, and they also harbour the terrorists that attack our troops in Afghanistan".

However, the secretary of state said last month that the USA would be "ready to talk any time North Korea ... and we're ready to have the first meeting without precondition".
