Sopore: Marking the return of IED attacks in Kashmir after three years, a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) blast killed four policemen in Sopore town amid a shutdown on the 25th anniversary of the Sopore massacre. Six or seven shops have suffered damage as well", he said, adding "it was the first (IED) blast since 2015.

"The IED was planted beneath a shop", Greater Kashmir quoted an unidentified official as saying.

Police said that security across the town and its neighbourhood had been beefed up ahead of one-day strike called by local traders and endorsed by an alliance of key separatist leaders called "Joint Resistance Leadership". Condemning the incident, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said she was deeply pained by the deaths.

Immediately after the blast, police, CRPF and army men launched combing and search operation in the area to nab the attackers. Authorities had deployed a large number of forces in the market and other areas of Sopore in the wake of the protest shutdown.


Later in the day, Khan led a wreath-laying ceremony for the slain policemen at the District Police Lines Sopore. They claimed that many innocents were targetted.

The spokesman said ASI Irshad Ahmad is survived by his elderly mother, wife, two sons and two daughters.

The IED explosion took place a week after JeM militants carried out a suicide attack at a CRPF camp at Lethpora village in Pulwama district.
