There's A Flight That Took Off In 2018 And Landed In 2017

In between New Zealand and Hawaii is the worldwide date line, which explains the hefty time difference between the two locales. Well, at least it was for the passengers and flight crew aboard that flight!

Honolulu is 23 hours behind Auckland and the nine-hour and 10 minute flight landed at 10:16 am on December 31, 2017. In fact, the jet traveled through several time zones and the International Date Line.

But it is not as uncommon as some might believe with planes crossing the International Date Line every day. It takes just over eight hours to fly from Auckland to Honolulu, so everyone on board had plenty of time to prep for New Year's Eve take two.

An unexpected delay has caused an global flight to depart in 2018 and arrive at its destination in 2017 - and it has left many people scratching their heads. The same flight that took off on Saturday, 30 December took passengers back a day, by landing in Honolulu on 29 December.

The passengers of the flight and the users of Twitter were surprised to discover about the time-traveling flight and enjoyed the rare circumstances. And we got free champagne on the plane. Many of them borrowed GIFs from Back to the Future.

Interestingly, this "back to the future" phenomenon nearly didn't happen.

The flight was scheduled to leave Auckland at 11.55 p.m. but was delayed 10 minutes, meaning it ended up taking off on Jan 1.
