Trump's statement further irritated London as many people and government officials asked May to withdraw her invitation to Trump to pay a state visit.

The new United States embassy will be on London's Southbank and will reportedly be one of the most secure buildings in London, featuring a 100ft 'moat'.

In fact, the decision to move the embassy to Nine Elms in south London was made by the George W. Bush Administration.

The U.S. presence on Grosvenor Square goes back to the late 18th century, when future president John Adams was the first U.S. envoy to England.

It said: "The US State Department today signed a conditional agreement with the real estate developer Ballymore to acquire a site in the Nine Elms Opportunity Area in Wandsworth for the construction of a new Embassy".

However, it is widely believed that Trump would be facing a fair amount of dissent from protesters, and one ally of the president, former Ukip leader Nigel Farage, said that may have played into his decision to remain stateside as well.

"It seems he's finally got the message", wrote London's mayor, Sadiq Khan.

"Donald Trump has cancelled a visit to Britain next month to open the new U.S. embassy in London, amid fears of mass protests", the Guardian piece read.

Battersea Labour MP Marsha De Cordova said Mr Trump was "scared to come to London because of all the peaceful protests he will face".

Around 4 per cent of Britons - 2.5 million people - said they would protest a visit, according to a poll a year ago.

Unrest during the president's visit would be an embarrassment for the United States, which has been one of the U.K.'s closest allies for a century.

The trip was not the controversial full state visit offered by Theresa May, for which no date has yet been set.

But the decision to cancel the visit will be an embarrassment to British Prime Minister Theresa May. We celebrate and welcome good men and woman of all creeds no matter the colour of their skin or the colour of their flag.

While the trip was always meant to be a working one, and separate to an official full state visit this year for which a date has not been set, as president Trump has visited more than a dozen countries ahead of Britain, including Belgium, China, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Philippines, Poland, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Vietnam.

As pointed out by Khan, this would be largely because of "his divisive agenda" on racial and cultural issues, but is surely also spurred on by Trump's sharing of a Britain First tweet last month.
