Trump to attend Wednesday's gold medal ceremony for Bob Dole

WASHINGTON - The Gold Medal Ceremony honoring former Kansas Senator Bob Dole is scheduled for 2p.m.CDT Wednesday in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol in Washington. He was the GOP presidential nominee in 1996 and lost the election to Bill Clinton.

Two significant examples of Dole's willingness to reach across the political aisle, Pinegar said, were his work in creating the Americans with Disabilities Act and Social Security reform.

Bronze replicas of the medal are authorized by Congress under Public Law No: 115-60 and are available from the United States Mint.

"They couldn't have given it to a better person", she said in an interview Tuesday, "especially when we look at how things are today".

"His entire life he selflessly served our nation's public and our national veterans", Pinegar said by phone from Washington, D.C. "Senator Dole's career is is a ideal example of what can be accomplished through the means of compromise and bipartisanship". He would serve in the House until joining the Senate in 1969, where he would serve in numerous leadership posts until his departure in 1996 as majority leader.

Dole served in the military in World War II.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, a Republican from Wisconsin, presented the medal to the decorated World War II veteran during a ceremony at the Capitol. "I am pleased the President quickly approved this legislation, and I look forward to the presentation of this elite award in the near future".

"To the stars through difficulties, a handsome motto of the truly great state of Kansas, and the flawless description for Senator Dole's extraordinary life", Trump said.

Dole is considered one of his party's best dealmakers, a distinction Trump has given himself, as well. Other Congressional Gold Medal honorees include Senators Robert Kennedy, John Glenn and Harry Truman. In the wake of serving in the US Army amid World War II, Dole served in the Kansas House of Representatives, at that point the US House of Representatives, before in the long run getting chose as a US congressperson from Kansas. But Trump and the Republican-led Congress are now mired in a pitched budget battle that could end in a government shutdown at the end of the week if not resolved. President Donald Trump will present the award.
