It was initially set to have a late 2017 release but was pushed back. Both the Wii and Wii U have had a worrying history when it comes to online gaming, but the Switch hasn't had many games that could truly put this online service to the test.

The 3DS is already about to enter its seventh year, but support for it has been slowing down for some time as Nintendo concentrates on the Switch.

Nintendo had a hard time keeping the console on shelves for much of the year.

Nintendo Switch aims to offer different subscription packages.

An iOS or Google Play app will let you send invites via social networks and messaging service to invite friends to play with you.

Once the paid service goes live, users will be able to choose whether they wish to pay by month, annually, or every three months. Japanese video-game company Nintendo Co. says a movie starring the plumber in the Super Mario franchise is in the works, co-produced with Chris Meledandri, the chief executive of Illumination Entertainment, the USA animation studio behind the popular "Despicable Me" series. 3 and Balloon Battle. On top of all that, Nintendo reported strong earnings from the Super NES Classic Edition, their downloadable markets, their mobile gaming endeavors, and their Amiibo line.

Nintendo stated that "For the Nintendo Switch software, Super Mario Odyssey was released in October and has been a big hit, with global sales reaching 9.07 million units". An annual subscription will cost you $20.

Since the Switch has only been available for about 10 months, only so many people have bought it thus far - the PlayStation 4 has been around since 2013, and there are over 70 million in the wild. Japanese gaming company Nintendo announced Thursday that it's partnering with Illumination, the US studio behind hit films "Despicable Me" and "Minions" to make an animated Super Mario movie, CNN reported.
