Speaker of the House Paul Ryan was hammered on social media Saturday when he cited a high school secretary's $1.50 per week pay hike as a success of the GOP's recent tax reform bill.

Ryan's tweet was the latest show of Republicans patting themselves on the back for the tax bill, which slashed corporate taxes.

Ketchum had told AP her check went up $1.50 per week and, while the quote wasn't a stretch, she more or less felt put on the spot to say something. A Costco membership, the Gold Star package-the tier which provides the least benefits- costs $60 a year, which is presumably what Ketchum's $78 annual raise can cover.

Ryan's Democratic challenger nearly immediately engaged, and other Democrats similarly piled on in an attempt to flip the script after weeks of positive news stories about the effects of the tax cuts.

The tweet shared the story of a secretary who, according to a report by the Associated Press, was "pleasantly surprised her pay went up $1.50 a week".

As for being out of touch, the worse thing Ryan could have done, other than posting the tweet, was to delete it. The woman Paul Ryan bragged about helping will only save $78 per year over the next eight years - so she will save $624 in total.

Ryan was responding to an Associated Press story about the controversial tax overhaul's effect on Americans' paychecks. "Chip in $1.50 now to help us repeal and replace Ryan permanently this November", Bryce tweeted.

Social media users and lawmakers have been blasting Ryan on Twitter following his tweet and delete.

Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau also linked to Ryan's tweet, writing: "As a thank you for passing a $1 trillion corporate tax cut, Paul Ryan received $500,000 in campaign contributions from the Koch brothers, which would probably cover the cost of buying a Costco".

Democrats also lashed out at Ryan saying that the tweet was not a PR mistake but a proof of what Ryan actually thinks.
