The Butler didn't do it, cornerback benched for Super Bowl

Now one day after the Patriots' Super Bowl loss, we are not much closer to learning the details behind Belichick's odd coaching decision.

We may never know the real reason for Butler's benching, but if it was something of this nature that led to the Patriots keeping arguably their best defender on the sideline for the biggest game of the year, it could be a tough pill to swallow for the New England fans. That was a power trip.

"That doesn't concern me at all", he said when asked about Butler's benching.

The Patriots' defense struggled mightily against the Eagles, surrendering the most points (41) and total yards (538) of any playoff game under Belichick.

Eagles defensive end Chris Long, who helped New England win the Super Bowl last season before joining Philadelphia, expressed surprise at his former teammate's benching.

"Lost the game for us tonight", former cornerback Brandon Browner captioned an Instagram photo of Belichick. You make the decision to give us the best chance to win.

"It wasn't official until kickoff", Rowe told reporters, revealing he didn't know he was going to start in place of Butler until right before the game. "But u don't play your best cornerback".

Why was Malcolm Butler benched for Super Bowl 52? You divide the locker room when you do that. "I don't know what it was". The Patriots and Eagles had two of the best defenses in the league throughout the regular season and postseason.

The decision to not play Butler came down to matchups, according to defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. "I guess I wasn't playing good".

The bigger Rowe had reportedly been practicing during the week as a starting cornerback opposite Stephon Gilmore, but Rowe said after the game that he still expected Butler to get his share of playing time.

Belichick said on Monday: "I respect Malcolm's competitiveness, and I'm sure that he felt like he could have helped". "We all want to be out there, we all want to play, so I know Malc, he's super competitive".

Butler saw some playing time on special teams, but that was the extent of his playing time as Stephon Gilmore, Eric Rowe and Johnson Bademosi saw almost all the playing time at corner for the Patriots. "It is what it is", Butler said, per ESPN's Mike Reiss.
