Black Lives Matter activist killed in New Orleans shooting

Officers arrived at 1900 Bienville Street at about 1:30 a mountain bike "covered in blood" on the opposite side of where d'Baha lay bleeding, according to a report released by the New Orleans Police Department on Wednesday morning. The circumstances of the shooting were not immediately clear. Sad news has been reported that Muhiyidin was fatally shot in New Orleans this morning when he was riding a bike and someone shot him in his leg.

After the incident, which resulted in charges for d'Baha, the activist told the Washington Post he had charged at the demonstrator after seeing elders he was speaking to look fearful at the sight of the Confederate flag. On Tuesday, friends and family gathered outside Charleston City Hall to mourn the loss of the local Black Lives Matter leader, reports CBS affiliate WCSC.

"Muhiyyidin was a warrior for this community and a attractive soul", said one person who donated to help cover d'Baha's funeral costs.

Kim Duncan, d'Baha's sister, says that her brother had left Charleston in December "just to get away for a while", according to The Charleston Chronicle, an African-American newspaper in Charleston.

Weaver, Moye's niece, said the family was raising money for the cost of transporting her uncle's body from New Orleans to Charleston.

It was the same place Moye first made a name for himself with passionate speeches in the days after Scott, an unarmed black man, was killed by a white North Charleston police officer as he ran from a traffic stop. "I've never met anyone more committed and hardworking than him". Moye would later interrupt city council meetings to demand leaders change policies to give the public more power to assure police accountability.

Other known local activists, including Pastor Thomas Dixon, have taken to social media to express their condolences and share news of Moye's death.

Another activist at the vigil said Moye is irreplaceable.
