US forces reportedly responded to an "unprovoked attack" by Syrian pro-regime forces at the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) headquarters on Wednesday, according to a statement from US Central Command (CENTCOM). One SDF member was wounded.

The US maintains about 2,000 troop in Syria which mostly work with the over 50,000-strong Syrian Democratic Forces, a mix of Kurdish and Arab fighters and have been the primary US-backed force fighting ISIS in Syria. One US official said the pro-government forces may have been trying to seize the Khusham oil fields.

The US-led coalition had previously alerted Russian officials about the presence of SDF forces in nearby Khusham after seeing a slow build-up of pro-government forces during the last week.

A United States official told CNN that the attackers crossed the Euphrates River and were armed with artillery and other weapons.

In a statement, the USA -led military coalition tasked with battling the Islamic State called the attack southeast of the city of Deir Ezzour in eastern Syria "unprovoked". Up to 30 artillery and tank rounds came within 500 yards of an SDF headquarters.

"The coalition conducted strikes against attacking forces to repeal the act of aggression", it said.

The US-led coalition fighting ISIS in Syria conducted strikes against pro-regime forces in Syria Wednesday, the coalition said in a statement.

Regime and SDF fighters were involved in several skirmishes in the area previous year, as they each conducted parallel operations against some of the Islamic State jihadist group's last bastions. The official said they have not ruled out that Iranian backed-forces might have also been involved in the attack. "It's not always readily apparent" what sort of forces they are maneuvering on the ground in Syria's crowded battlespace, he said.
