Moon was all smiles as he greeted Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and Kim Yong Nam, the country's 90-year-old nominal head of state, for lunch at the presidential residence.

Inside, it had seven more pictures of their meetings with Moon and the opening ceremony in Pyeongchang - four of them featuring the South Korean leader, who was described as president.

In a meeting hours before Friday's opening ceremony, Abe warned Moon not to fall for North Korea's "smile diplomacy", according to Moon's office.

Mr. Moon hasn't decided on whether or when to visit the North.

"It was so sudden that the Korean government put the North Korean players on the South Korean team", said Ahn Jae-myeong, 23, a hockey fan and student at Kwangwoon University in Seoul who came to see the game.

Moon's open answer is thought to reflect current multilateral relations surrounding the Korean Peninsula, and conditions set by Seoul, Washington and the global community.

Pence has meant to use his trip to the Olympics to caution the South against "falling for" the North's overtures, which in the past have been used as stall tactics to allow for continued development of its nuclear program.

But Pyongyang's nuclear programme will hang over any attempts to bring the countries closer together.

His father and President Trump have both stated unequivocally that he was the victim of torture by Kim Jong Un's regime.

In its first reports about the Games, North Korea's state-run media slammed U.S. Vice President Mike Pence on Saturday for what it called "shameful" and "snobbish" behavior not in line with the spirit of the Olympics.

The South Korean President also stressed the need for the Communist North to resume its dialogue with the US. The attack on the ship, Cheonan, killed 46 South Korean sailors. "Let us make it happen by creating the necessary conditions in the future", he was quoted as saying.

He added that U.S. and allied military exercises will be delayed until after the end of the Winter Olympics on February 25.

Moon, who was seated in front of the North Korean delegation, was photographed shaking hands with a smiling Kim.

North Korea conducted its largest nuclear test a year ago and said it had developed a missile capable of carrying a warhead to the United States.

North Korea continues to defy increasingly tough sanctions, and states at every opportunity that its nuclear weapons program is nonnegotiable.

Regardless of obstacles, Saturday's meeting marks a historic milestone in inter-Korean relations. His sister verbally delivered his offer at the meeting. Her team mate Kim Boutin also cruised to the 500m quarter-finals by winning her heat with 43.634 seconds.

The first summit was in June 2000 between Kim Dae-jung, a proponent of the so-called Sunshine Policy, and Kim Jong Il.

The first full day of competition got underway Saturday at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, with five medal events and a slew of qualifying rounds. South Korean participants included senior officials Jeong Eui-yong, Jo Myong-gyoon and Im Jong-suk - the chief presidential secretary.
