Red Raiders No. 3 seed in NCAA bracket preview

The second-year event features the selection committee bracketing the top 16 teams in the country as if today was selection Sunday. Xavier was the third No. 1 seed (Midwest Region) and Purdue, which lost twice this week, was the fourth No. 1 seed (West Region). Bruce Rasmussen, the director of athletics at Creighton University, will be the chairman of the 2018 NCAA Tournament selection. Auburn's current RPI rating is 8th and boast a strength of schedule of 36th.

Complicated by a volatile week that included Virginia losing to Virginia Tech, Villanova to St. John's and Purdue to Ohio State and Michigan State, Sunday's seedings included only the top 16 and bracketed them by region. The Boilermakers were given the West's No. 1 seed.

Villanova was selected as the second No. 1 seed (East Region). They also have four Quadrant 2 wins and only two losses outside Quadrant 1. Mazzulla dropped 39 points in the state championship game that season, and was named the Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year as a junior and senior.

The reveal provides insight into the selection committee's thinking exactly a month before Selection Sunday, on March 11. The exception was Virginia, which was replaced by Purdue. The 3-seed in Auburn's region was Clemson and the 4-seed was Oklahoma. No other conference had more than three teams.

The Virginia men's basketball team may have used up some of its margin for error with a loss Saturday, but the people who matter perceive the Cavaliers as the team to beat in the NCAA Tournament next month. Meanwhile, Virginia Tech jumped to 56th from 67th, upgrading its chances of earning a tournament bid. Clemson is now ranked 16th by the Associated Press and 15th in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

"I just wanted to win", Virginia coach Tony Bennett said Saturday night of the No. 1 prospects. I wouldn't have felt great.
