Jan Mursak struck the victor just 38 seconds into overtime as Slovenia recovered from trailing 2-0 midway through the second period.

It's going to be a much different competition this year without the participation of the National Hockey League, which declined to stop its season to send players to Pyeongchang, but a run toward gold by the Americans would be just as sweet.

But will little time left in the game Wednesday, Mursak lingered toward the front of the United States goal crease, near goalie Ryan Zapolski.

- Women's hockey: The USA will face Canada in what amounts to a crucial rivalry game for the Americans.

Goals from Jan Urbas and Mursak in the third period sent the tie into overtime. All four have significant global experience, but Terry is probably the most recognizable name as he was the hero who scored the shootout-winning goal in the gold medal game at last year's World Junior Championships. Forward Garrett Roe flew down the left wing and dished the puck to a waiting O'Neill to give the USA a 1-0 lead 17:44 in. Both the Team USA men and women will take the ice for one of the most exciting days on the schedule. Slovenia only gets two, instead of three, since the win did not come in regulation.

Slovenia had begun to tilt the ice toward the United States end, after they were out-shot for most of the first two periods, as the Americans were mostly the aggressors.

Blaz Gregorc, who had a goal and an assist for Slovenia, fired shot on goal from the point.

"I'm proud of my guys, I'm proud of the team", said Mursak, who played sporadically with the NHL's Detroit Red Wings between 2010 and 2012.

Returning to the lineup later in the season, he had trouble finding any playing time, the Red Wings put him on waivers and Mursak signed with Amur Khabarovsk of the KHL. After the US reached double-digits in number of shots taken, Brian O'Neill, a 29-year-old who plays in Finland, scored first for Team USA with just more than two minutes left in the first period. The Americans outshot Slovenia 11-3 in the first period.

For the first time since the 1994 Games, NHL players are not on the US roster.

The United States continues preliminary round play against Slovakia at 10:10 Eastern Thursday.
