Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon there was a report of a suspicious person spotted by a police officer who was patrolling the grounds by the Thompson Center, otherwise referred to as the State of Illinois Building, which has businesses on the first floor and a food court on the floor below.

"The idea that Paul would act so unselfishly and would sacrifice his own safety for the safety of the people of Chicago and his fellow officers comes as no surprise to those of us who knew him", said a statement from the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation.

Thought and prayers to the family of Commander Bauer. "I've been meeting with his wife and daughter this is a hard day for us but we will get through it". The two got into a struggle and fell down a stairwell before Legghette shot Bauer. "This is like a gut punch to the Police Department".

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Johnson, and other top police brass gathered at Police Headquarters on Wednesday to discuss the case.
