Man suspected in 4-year-old SC girl's kidnapping arrested

Police in Charleston, South Carolina are searching for a missing 4-year-old girl.

Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson identified the suspect as 37-year-old Thomas Evans who is from the area and was captured in MS following a chase that started in Alabama. Authorities in Alabama found the little girl on Wednesday, in a auto with suspect, Thomas Lawton Evans. The AP reported the girl was found by police in a vehicle with Evans and he sped off after handing over Todd.

The chief said at a news conference that the girl was watching cartoons, drinking milk and coloring while she waited to be reunited with her father.

On Tuesday, Heidi Todd, 4, went missing after her mother was found with multiple injuries.

US marshals will take Evans back to SC, where he will face a kidnapping charge.

Heidi Renae Todd disappeared just before 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

Heidi has been returned safely to her family, and her mother, who underwent emergency surgery, is expected to survive.

The mother was found "brutally beaten" but officers did not find Heidi, Tecklenburg said.

"The attacker pushed her in the home and tackled her to the ground", authorities said.

The mother told investigators that when she was attacked and assaulted, she told Heidi to run and hide.

The FBI was involved in the investigation and had offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to Heidi's recovery.

Rhue, the Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, said investigators determined that someone had tried to use an "electronic access device" belonging to the woman at a gas station in Greensboro, Georgia, about 235 miles west of Charleston and 76 miles east of Atlanta.

Around 5 p.m. Eastern Time, someone called police to report the auto being there as suspicious.

The mayor said there was no Amber alert issued for Heidi because authorities did not have enough information to meet the criteria for one.

The mayor of Charleston is encouraging prayers for a missing 4-year-old girl and he is asking people everywhere to be on the lookout for a person of interest.

The State Law Enforcement Division has asked law enforcement agencies across the state to look for the girl.
