Attempting to alleviate the tension, a producer pointed to a black envelope in Bourdon's hands, which she hands to Beatty, offering the ice-breaker: 'The design is a little different than previous year'.

Last year's announcement went famously awry when Dunaway announced that "La La Land" won best picture, only for that film's producer to tell a shocked audience that the real victor was "Moonlight". To make sure the envelope mix-up won't happen again, the Academy has implemented new procedures that include making sure the announcers get the correct category envelope before stepping onto the stage.

With this envelope in hand, Dunaway and Beatty read "La La Land" as the night's big victor rather than "Moonlight", the actual victor. But it was unclear why they would have been given the wrong envelope - until it came to light that the chaos stemmed from a rep for the Oscars' accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Host Jimmy Kimmel on Sunday began his monologue at the Academy Awards 2018 by taking a swipe at last year's Best Picture mix-up.

"This year, when you hear your name called, don't get up right away", he told the audience Sunday.

Chuckling a little as he opened the envelope, Warren announced Shape Of Water as the winning flick.

As important, the famously-uptight Academy has embraced last year's wonderful gaffe. "That's just what we do when we try to keep shows clean".

Kimmel hoped for a better result at this year's ceremony. Eight films he has produced have earned 53 Academy nominations, and in 1999, he was awarded the Academy's highest honor, the Irving G. Thalberg Award.

It turned out that they were handed the wrong envelope before walking on the stage.

Now it's time for some celebration and laughter one year later, with Beatty and Dunaway triumphantly striding out on the Oscar stage with that right envelope.

"It's so nice seeing you again", Beatty said.
