Amazon confirmed Wednesday that its engineers are working on a fix for a software glitch that causes its smart speaker devices to laugh without user prompting.

"We're aware of this and working to fix it", Amazon told Business Insider in a statement.

Twitter and Reddit users have been reporting this alarming, "witch-like" cackle coming from their devices - sometimes unprompted or as a weird response to requests to turn off the lights.

Other users have since come forward with their own instances of random Alexa laughter. However some users are reporting that Alexa is laughing and the giggles happen at odd hours and with no user prompt.

"Having an office conversation about pretty confidential stuff and Alexa just laughed", he wrote.

So Alexa chose to laugh randomly while I was in the kitchen.

But reported situations of unprompted laughter in silent homes are obviously quite creepy. Some users have resorted to unplugging their Echo devices to ensure that Alexa can not interject anything, ominous or not.

"I live alone and have lights controlled by Amazon Echo", he began.

No, you're (probably) not being haunted, it's just Amazon's Alexa voice assistant malfunctioning in a profoundly creepy way.
