Still, PS4 players will get to play with PC, iOS, and Android devices, while Xbox One players will also be able to play with the same platforms, minus the PS4 players.

For a company's whose tagline for their gaming console is "this is for the players", Sony's actions continue to speak much louder than their marketing efforts.

This isn't the first time we see blocked cross-play functionalities between PS4 and Xbox One. Microsoft has already publicly said it supports cross-play with this title which puts the limitation squarely on Sony's shoulders as Kotaku notes that in September, a "configuration issue" accidentally allowed PS4 and Xbox players fight it out online before the setting was updated.

"Microsoft has always been a leading voice in encouraging the adoption of cross-platform play and the potential of connecting players across PC, mobile and all consoles", reads the brief email statement. Further, the executive stated that for any other questions related to Fortnite cross-play between Xbox and PlayStation, Epic and Sony should be contacted. And since the PS4 is now outselling Xbox One, disabling the function will only help sustain the present sales figures. If your friend got invited by Epic, check with them to see if they have a friend code to share with you.

A cross-play between both consoles is very feasible from a technical perspective, something that developers have been discussing for a long time.

Ultimately, it's the expected control scheme for Fortnite on mobile, even if it isn't the most elegant solution. Xbox players would not be able to compete against PlayStation users, which is pretty annoying. It is, however, not clear if it was a bug or an effort by Fortnite to demonstrate just how easy it is to enable the cross-platform play from the technical perspective, notes Forbes.

Other accounts are a bit more up front with their lack of affiliation with Epic Games and Fortnite, though they still gate their giveaways with retweet or subscription requirements.

While announcing the mobile version, Epic talked of its vision for the game, saying, "We believe this is the future of games".

For the Fortnite, Microsoft requires a paid subscription to Xbox Live Gold in order to play. Epic Games opened its sign-up page for mobile devices on Monday, and the site went down nearly immediately because of all the extra traffic.

To participate, users will need an internet connection and iOS 11 on at least an iPhone 6S/SE, iPad Mini 4, iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, iPad 2017 devices.
