Lara has a wounded relationship with her missing dad, whom she hasn't even been able to mourn because he had disappeared when Lara was 13.

There are many ways for a movie to go wrong, and "Tomb Raider" goes wrong in numerous most obvious: It has a generic story, bad writing, a miscast lead, the wrong director and no fun.

Describing the events of "Tomb Raider", this boredom probably sounds tough to imagine. I found the training and muscle-building to be empowering.

Tomb Raider opens in cinemas tomorrow. Although she wasn't the first choice to play Lara Croft, Angelina Jolie beat out, most notably, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Famke Janssen, Jennifer Lopez, Rhona Mitra, Elizabeth Hurley, Ashley Judd, Sandra Bullock, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Diane Lane, Demi Moore and Denise Richards, among others.

But over the last few weeks, Alicia Vikander has been subjected to vile sexist abuse by online trolls who claim that her "boobs aren't big enough for the job".

She's a Hamlet-quoting, kickboxing Deliveroo rider until she stumbles upon a secret clue left behind by her dead archaeologist father (played by sepia-toned Dominic West, who shows up about every three minutes in a maudlin flashback). (A line that I read as a subtle rebuke to her more top-heavy predecessor.) Not sufficiently worn out by that, she then puts in a shift as a bicycle courier and, as an encore, competes in a pedal-powered race through the streets of London.
