The ministry says Syria shot down five out of the eight missiles that targeted the base.

Israel has struck Syrian army locations many times in the course of the conflict, hitting convoys and bases of Iranian-backed militias that fight alongside Syrian President Bashar al Assad's forces.

Trump said on Sunday there would be a "big price to pay" after medical aid groups reported dozens of civilians, including many children and women, were killed by poison gas in the besieged rebel-held town of Douma.

The United States has dismissed Syrian claims accusing it of attacking a Homs air base.

The suspected chemical attack came as the Syrian regime on Friday intensified the air and ground assault on Douma, the last rebel foothold in eastern Ghouta district on the edge of the capital, Damascus.

These reports could not be independently verified.

Russian U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said on Monday that Moscow has warned the United States of "grave repercussions" if it carries out an attack against Syrian government forces over reports of a deadly chemical weapons attack.

Trump on Monday condemned the "heinous attack" in Syria and said he would make a decision on a USA response "probably by the end of today" after huddling with military advisers.


French President Emmanuel Macron spoke to Trump by telephone and the two agreed that they would work together to establish clear responsibility for what Macron's office said they had agreed was a confirmed chemical attack. The European Union also said evidence pointed to the use of chemical weapons by Assad's forces.

The UN Security Council will meet twice on Monday following rival requests by Russian Federation and the United States to investigate the alleged chemical attack.

"The numbers keep rising as relief workers struggle to gain access to the subterranean areas where gas has entered and hundreds of families had sought refuge", the group said.

Britain's permanent representative Karen Pierce said the situation today was worse than that during the Cold War because then there was no such flagrant disregard of the universal prohibition against chemical weapons.

Professor Rapharl Pitti of UOSSM France said that after viewing videos from the site, the patients seem to present convulsions more typical of sarin.

The attack appears to have brought Assad closer to sealing victory in the military campaign for eastern Ghouta launched by the Russian-backed Syrian army in February.

The Syrian opposition blames the suspected chemical attack on Saturday in the town of Douma on regime forces.

Guterres's speical envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, told the Council via a video link from Geneva that the terrorist group Jaish al-Islam that was in control of Douma had asked for United Nations intervention, but the Syrian government did not respond to it.
