Hulu and Spotify Team Up to Offer Combined Subscription

The labels scored one victory past year in the latest round of negotiations, convincing Spotify to let artists delay the release of new works on the free service.

Meanwhile, Spotify this week launched a new Premium subscription plan that includes Hulu for $12.99 a month.

Bloomberg reports that the streaming giant, which just went public last week, is "developing a new version of its free music service". On its own, Spotify Premium runs $9.99 a month, and Hulu's cheapest Limited Commercials plan is $7.99.

"In fact really this deal seems to be Hulu's way of luring Spotify's almost 71 million active subscribers onto its cord-cutting service".

Spotify offered a similar bundle deal with Hulu to students a year ago for $4.99-per-month, but is now expanding the package to its subscribers (and subsequently to its potential subscriber) in the US. After that, you'll start being billed for $12.99/month. This summer, the bundle will be rolled out to all Spotify users this summer. Spotify is Apple Music's biggest rival in the U.S., and the music streaming service looks to take on the recently launched Amazon Prime Music among others in the Indian market.

It seems that basic cable is nearly gone, as many people don't need the hundreds of channels you will never watch. Hulu has been ramping up original programming with shows such as "The Handmaid's Tale" and "The Looming Tower" to compete with popular streaming competitors such as Netflix. The Sweden-based company provides users with DRM-protected content from labels and media companies on a subscription basis.

This is a great business move, as Spotify has 71 MILLION monthly users, with Hulu only at 17 million.

Spotify said the student offer was "incredibly well received".
