Cameroon confirm eight athletes have gone missing at Gold Coast 2018

The missing athletes are boxers Simplice Fotsala, Arsene Fokou Fosso, Christian Ndzie Tsoye, Ulrich Rodrigue Yombo and Christelle Aurore Ndiang.

There were also three weightlifters - Olivier Matam Matam, Petit Minkoumba and Arcangeline Fouodji Sonkbou.

Five members of the Cameroon team competing in the Commonwealth Games on Australia's Gold Coast have gone missing. Officials said they are monitoring reports of the absences from the federations.

Cameroon chef de mission Victor Agbo Nso said team officials had notified Australian police.

"But out here, only six of them effectively took part in their respective competitions, while two left without competing".

"These are worldwide athletes who have very strict training programs and they undertook their training as was expected", Cr Dobie said.

The Cameroon team's press agent Simon Molombe told news.com.au the players "just left in the night" and there were no leads on the missing athletes on Thursday morning.

He said they were "taking the mickey".

"We would appreciate them sticking within the law, enjoying themselves, but sticking within the law", organising committee boss Peter Beattie told reporters.

"The authorities are very disappointed with the deserters - some did not even compete", Molombe said.

"It's very worrying, it's not good for the image of the country".

The developments came a day after Cameroon revealed eight of its 42-strong Games team are missing, including two boxers who failed to appear for their bouts.

"If there is a breach then [Home Affairs Minister] Peter Dutton and the department will deal with it", he said. "They are still within their visas, they have the right to travel freely", Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive David Grevemberg said.

Cameroon said the group had valid Australian visas until 15 May.

It is not the first time competitors have gone missing at global events. Following the 2012 London Olympics, at least 21 athletes were reported missing, including seven from Cameroon, and four from the DRC, as well as nationals of Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, Sudan and Ethiopia.
