Trump warns West Virginia voters not to pick Don Blankenship

Last week, Trump's eldest son Don Jr. tweeted that West Virginia should oppose Blankenship.

President Donald Trump tweeted on Monday that Blakenship can not win the general election on Tuesday and suggested that West Virginians should either vote for Morrisey or the establishment-backed Rep. Evan Jenkins (R-WV).

President Donald Trump is weighing in on West Virginia's Republican Senate primary, telling voters to "remember Alabama".

Trump is citing Alabama Republican Roy Moore, who lost a special Senate election after allegations of past sexual misconduct.

Many on the right are concerned if Blankenship wins the primary, he'll nearly certainly lose the general election to Democratic Sen. In a Tweet Monday morning, Trump attempted to appeal to the sensibilities of West Virginia Republicans, who voted Trump into office in 2016 by almost 42 points. His rise in the Republican field comes shortly after he was convicted in 2015 of skirting safety regulations that led to the Upper Branch mine disaster in 2010, which killed 29 miners and injured several others. In 2012, faced with a almost impossible re-election in a red state, McCaskill operated a secret campaign on behalf of Tea Party candidate Todd Akin in the primary, knowing he would be easier to beat than establishment candidate John Brunner.

Thus, we have Trump today trying to cut into that populist momentum - to the extent it exists - in order to ensure that Blankenship is left sidelined after tomorrow.

"The President is a very busy man and he doesn't know me, and he doesn't know how flawed my two main opponents are in this primary", he said in a statement Monday. He added: "The establishment is misinforming him because they do not want me to be in the US Senate and promote the President's agenda".

Blankenship has made his opposition to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. a centerpiece of the campaign in which he referred to McConnell's in-laws as his "China family" in a recent campaign ad. "I will beat Joe Manchin and ditch Cocaine Mitch, for the sake of the kids". Republicans have grown concerned that Blankenship may have taken advantage of infighting between two more established Republicans vying for the opportunity to unseat Joe Manchin.

US President Donald Trump has warned West Virginians not to vote for a Republican candidate who describes himself as "Trumpier than Trump". He also is running television ads targeting the Taiwanese heritage of McConnell's wife, U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.

"Swamp Captain Mitch McConnell has contributed tens of thousands of jobs to China Folks", Mr. Blankenship stated in 1 firm, alluding to the shipping work of Mr. McConnell's father in law, an American citizen.

"No way!" Trump tweeted.

"This idea that calling someone a "Chinaperson" - I mean, I'm an American-person - I don't see this insinuation by the press that there is something racist about saying a 'Chinaperson, '" Blankenship said.
