Fiat Chrysler Is Recalling 4.8 Million Vehicles Over Cruise Control Flaw

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling approximately 4.8 million vehicles in the United States as the company has determined an "unlikely sequence of events" could prevent the cruise control system from being deactivated.

The company said it was also warning owners in other markets not to use cruise control until recalls are completed.

Bill Bertrand, general manager at Morrie's Chippewa Valley Mazda, says it's important to pay attention to any warnings or correspondence regarding a vehicle recall. The Italian-American automaker said it's unaware of any injuries or accidents related to the flaw.

Fiat Chrysler said vehicles may be put in "park" once stopped, which turns cruise control off.

"When a manufacturer submits a recall out there, they're always 100 percent free", says Bertrand. It should also be possible to shift the vehicle to neutral. Most of the vehicles being recalled cover 2014-2018 model years.

That will cancel cruise control.

Fiat Chrysler shares were down 2 percent in afternoon trading in NY on the recall.

The models include the popular Ram pickup trucks of all sizes, the Jeep Cherokee and the Chrysler Pacifica minivan. The only way to stop at that point would be to brake to a full stop.

"Notwithstanding the extraordinary circumstances that must exist before a customer would experience a problem, we are taking this action because we are fully committed to vehicle safety", said Mark Chernoby, the company's head of vehicle safety and regulatory compliance for North America.

"We have a remedy and a widespread network of engaged dealers who are preparing to deliver service".

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the government's road safety agency, on Friday urged drivers not to use the cruise control until repairs are made.
