Visa Outages Reported Across Europe

A Visa spokesman said: "Visa is now experiencing a service disruption". The scale of the outage remains unclear.

First Bank told customers on Twitter there aren't "any timescales for resolution at the moment".

"This incident is preventing some Visa transactions in Europe being processed," the statement said.

"We are aware some customers are experiencing Visa debit card issues", the bank said. The network disruption, while just an annoyance for some, highlights the risks inherent in a global economy that increasingly relies on electronic payments for just about everything. "It is affecting all payment providers across the United Kingdom and Ireland".

Millions of shops and businesses across the United Kingdom are unable to process Visa card payments due to a nationwide outage in the Visa network.

Retailers have confirmed they are struggling to process Visa payments, with supermarkets relying on cash only payments in order to continue trading.

"It is a Visa credit and debit card issue that is affecting us intermittently".

"We now understand that contactless transactions have a better chance of going through".

However, the situation left some customers abandoning their shopping and walking out of stores.
