It's a testament to his faithfulness to Jesus that he was willing to obey Jesus' command to baptize new believers, even knowing that Lake Abaya is filled with crocodiles.

Eshete died after being bitten on his back, hands, and legs.

A crocodile has killed a Protestant pastor who was baptising followers near a lake in southern Ethiopia.

Members of the church are "devastated by what has happened", Ethiopian news site Borkena reported.

A pastor performing a mass lakeside baptism was attacked and killed by a crocodile in Ethiopia. "All of a sudden, a crocodile jumped out of the lake and grabbed the pastor", resident Ketema Kairo said.

Nearby fishermen used their nets to retrieve the body before the crocodile could drag it further into the lake.

Locals tried to capture the crocodile but it escaped.

Lake Abaya, Ethiopia's second-largest lake, is infested with aggressive crocodiles, according to the Lonely Planet travel guide.

The reptiles can grow to be up to six metres long and weigh as much as one tonne.

The Telegraph reported that lake and riverside baptisms are common in many African countries, notwithstanding the risk.
