Spade was a former accessories editor at the now-closed Mademoiselle magazine before launching her namesake design company, Kate Spade New York, in 1993.

David Spade has taken to his social networking sites to remember his sister-in-law Kate Spade after she was found dead at her home in NY this week in a suspected suicide.

The officials said housekeeping staff found her hanging inside her Park Avenue apartment at about 10:20 a.m.

Another Instagram fan of Ivanka's wrote: "Very sad".

Andy Spade has broken his silence on the death of his wife, Kate Spade. "I have worn her clothes many, many times", Mindy Kaling wrote.

Spade and her husband, Andy, had been married for 24 years.

"We loved Kate dearly and will miss her terribly", Kate's family said in a statement to to the New York Daily News.

Kate Spade is best known for her eponymous line of handbags and accessories she developed in the 1990s with her two business partners.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea told reporters that the note supports the theory that the cause of death was suicide. Spade was 55 years old.

She and her husband Andy built a fashion empire around her signature handbags.

I'm here to tell you that you are stronger than you think. I'm sorry to see that for many people, they still do not see viable options as an alternative to suicide. But by the end, "We hadn't even sold enough to cover the cost of the booth", Spade said.

When the comedian Robin Williams also ended his life by suicide in 2014, the act seemed to become a touchstone for Spade.

Kate's suicide note may indicate that her split from Andy was one reason that she took her own life. She also shared that in one of the last conversations she had with her sister, Spade asked her to come to her funeral.

"She understood that women are going to respond to things that feel like they're made by a human, that they are expressing someone's personality", Leive said. "And I just went 'What?'..." Though he said he and his sister often spoke several times a day, it sometimes became hard to get her on the phone.

Indeed, on social media, many women were recalling their first Spade bag.

In a February 2017 interview with NPR's How I Built This podcast, the designer admitted that she had always been a nervous person and that she had often anxious about her company, Kate Spade New York, going under in the early years.
