Inés Zorreguieta, sister to Dutch Queen Maxima, dead at 33

The younger sister of Queen Maxima of the Netherlands has died at her home in the Argentine capital, reports say.

Zorreguieta was a bridesmaid at her sister's wedding to then-Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander in 2002 and was godmother to their youngest of three daughters, 11-year-old Princess Ariane.

Other details about her death were not immediately available, but Zorreguieta had reportedly suffered from eating disorders and depression.

Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant reported that Queen Maxima was shocked and devastated by the news of her sister's death. It is intensely sad and heartbreaking news that can hardly be comprehended by those who stay behind.

Her father Jorge Zorreguieta, Argentina's former agriculture minister, died previous year. I wish them all the strength necessary to carry this frightful loss together. She canceled her upcoming engagements including a state visit to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.


Queen Maxima of the Netherlands' sister was found dead of an apparent suicide on Wednesday night, the BBC reports.

Zorreguieta was a psychologist who worked on social policies at the office of Argentina's president, Mauricio Macri.

Máxima said in a reaction that she is "very shocked and very upset" by the news, the RVD said.

She is said to have worked as a civil servant in Buenos Aires.
