The Portuguese believes Gareth Southgate's men would prevail in that clash - but would see their World Cup dreams dashed in the next round against five-time winners Brazil.

With the tournament kicking off on Thursday afternoon when Russian Federation take on Saudi Arabia there are still several group stage matches that have failed to sell out.

Double Champions League victor Mourinho earlier predicted that England would emerge from their World Cup group as winners - setting up a predicted match with Poland in the last 16.

"Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026", Carlos Cordiero, president of the US Soccer Federation told Congress. "Football today is the only victor". The U.S. proposed to host 60 out of the 80 matches, leaving Canada and Mexico with 10 fixtures each.

Finally, the FIFA World Cup is almost upon us, which means that it's time to tune in and see the biggest soccer tournament in the world from Russian Federation. Canada's sole World Cup appearance was in 1986 in Mexico, where they did not score a goal, losing to France, Hungry and the Soviet Union in the group stage.

With Russia hosting in 2018 and Qatar in 2022, no countries from either Europe or Asia were allowed to bid for the 2026 tournament.

Mexico has twice hosted the World Cup, in 1970 and 1986, the US hosted in 1994.

Both bids were given a last chance to make their case with 15-minute presentations in front of congress, at the Moscow Expocentre, where the North Americans pledged their tournament would generate an $11 billion profit, while Morocco said theirs would make $5 billion.
