They had appeared cautious and serious when they first arrived for the summit at the Capella hotel on Singapore's Sentosa, a resort island with luxury hotels, a casino, manmade beaches and a Universal Studios theme park.

As footage rolled of Trump landing in Singapore, Abby Huntsman called an upcoming meeting between Trump and Kim Jong Un a "meeting between two dictators".

The stroll was rehearsed for days, with White House staffers playing the roles of the two leaders before Trump and Kim did it for real, a White House official said.

The two leaders are expected to meet alone, with a pair of translators, for about 45 minutes.

Further, President Trump and Kim shook hands and then posed for a photograph at the entrance of the venue which was decked up with flags of the U.S. and North Korea. The president said that his newly formed relationship with the dictator is markedly different from the lesser relationships his predecessors had with Kim's relatives, saying "they've never gone this far, you know, they've never been at a level like this, and his father never dealt with a president".

But pressed on how he could "trust" a leader with such noted cases of human rights abuses leveled against him and his government, Mr. Trump said "I'm given what I'm given".

The two leaders promised in their joint document to "build a lasting and stable peace regime" on the Korean Peninsula and to repatriate remains of prisoners of war and those missing in action from the Korean War.

"We are going to have a great discussion and I think tremendous success". As they entered, Trump injected some levity to the day's extraordinary events, saying: "Getting a good picture everybody?"

Pompeo said earlier the summit should set the framework for "the hard work that will follow", insisting that North Korea had to move toward complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation.

USA and North Korean officials huddled throughout Monday at the Ritz-Carlton hotel, outlining specific goals for what the leaders should try to accomplish and multiple scenarios for resolving key issues, a senior U.S official said, adding that the meetings were also an ice breaker of sorts, allowing the teams to get better acquainted after decades of minimal contact between their nations.

And he said Kim has accepted an invitation to visit the White House - at the "appropriate" time.

Ahead of his arrival, spoke with optimism about the pending meeting in question following a conference eon the G& summit.

"It got done. I think it's a terrific document, it's a starter, but it's a terrific document".
